Going someplace nice?

The days are getting shorter and the nights chilly. It's that time of year when many people head off to sunnier climes. But if you're leaving the country, don't forget to get your health organised.

mdtravelhealth has some excellent advice on vaccinations you may need. Many of the vaccines give you years of protection, so while it may seem like yet another expense, it will be well worth it if you travel often. And of course the cost of vaccination will pay for itself many times over if it prevents significant illness. If you think you may need vaccinations try to visit your GP at least 2 months in advance.  But if you've left it late, check with your GP anyway - it's still better late than never.

Travel websites give good advice on what to carry in a medical kit. If you're travelling somewhere that has the potential to give you an upset tummy ask your GP for advice on what to do if you experience vomiting and diarrhoea. In some cases you'll be advised to take a prescription of antibiotics just in case.

Travel insurance is recommended to cover any health issues or accidents that may arise while travelling overseas. The cost of health care to visitors varies widely between different countries. Check here for a list of countries that have reciprocal agreements with Australia and will provide essential medical assistance to Australians for a cost more comparable to Medicare.

If traveling with prescription medicines get advice here on the paperwork you will be required to take with you, and ask your GP for an up-to-date medical summary.

Take precautions, drink plenty of clean water and bookmark this page before you go. Just in case.
